Research and research interests
Funded Research Projects:

Essay Assist: AcRF funded research project to develop a web-based software for helping students to make effective decisions during essay writing. A version of the product can be viewed at http://dev.cite.nie.edu.sg/essayassist  

Intervention in the Teaching of Expository Writing: CRPP funded project from July 2004 to September 2007 to research the effect of intervening during the writing process to shape student thinking and raise awareness of the socio-cultural context of writing. Report 

 

I am interested in working with anyone in these areas of research:
Academic writing - rhetorical moves in academic discourse; analysis of academic texts
Socio-rhetorical approaches to writing and the teaching of writing; socio-cognitive approaches to development of writing skills; application of genre theory in instruction
Functional approaches to teaching grammar to improve writing

Research topics of postgraduate students currently supervised/recently completed:
Digression in students' expository writing (MA by research)
Modality in students' expository essays (MA by research,  completed)
Effect of instructing PRC students in rhetorical moves in paragraph writing (MA Applied Linguistics; completed). 
Awareness of whole-text structure and reading comprehension (Ph D candidate; completed).
Teaching stance taking in expository writing in primary school (M.A. Applied Linguistics; completed).
